Inspiration Strikes!

While out jogging I am always scoping out my neighbors’ landscaping, front porches, and flowers (inspiration can strike at anytime). I like to get ideas for my own house; it’s like a real life Pinterest!

The past couple of years I have noticed so many cute variations of wooden hanging flower basket stands throughout. I love the way flowers make a nice accent to the porch. First, I was intrigued and thought to myself, Where did they get these? How much do they cost? Initially, it wasn’t clear to me that I could make one of my own (at the time I had also never used a saw before).

When I got home I browsed online to buy one. Shocked is an understatement as I found each hanging basket stand cost $85-130 online. No way was I spending that kind of money. A year or so passed, I started using power tools. I gained the confidence to try my hand at making one of these hanging flower basket stands.

Design Thoughts

For this built, it needs to be sturdy to hold the weight of the flower basket as well as withstand all the wind we get here. Using a 2″x10″ will provide the sturdiness desired. If you have already bought a hanging basket prior to making this, ensure your measurements and basket stand will fit the hanging basket. All cuts are customizable.

Hanging Flower Basket Stand Materials

• Hook
• Stain or paint
• Sealant
• Nails
• Wood: see cut list below
• Screws 3″ decking screws (left over from another project)
• Wood Glue–Exterior
• Paint and stencil or vinyl and a Cricut
• Old rags
• Wood filler

Tools

• Saw (there are so few cuts, you can always have the lumber store make the cuts)
• Drill /drill bit
• Hammer or nail gun
• Sander (or sand paper)

Instructions.

Step 1. Measure and Make Cuts

Provided are the measurements for a standard hanging basket. However, if a hanging basket has already been purchased, make adjustments as needed.

Cut List:

• 1x8x22 (2) top and bottom
• 1x8x18(1) welcome faceplate
• 2x4x28 (2) frame sides
• 2x4x18 (2) frame bottom
• 2x10x25 (1) base

Once all pieces are cut, dry fit them together to make sure everything is even and square. Make any adjustments now if needed.

Step 2. Sand, Stain (Paint), and Seal Pieces

Once everything is cut to size, sand all pieces with 220 grit sand paper. Wipe clean with a cloth. Choose a stain or paint that will accent your front porch. I love stain in the color “American Walnut” and have pieces stained with this throughout my home.

Use a wood conditioner for a more even stain, let set 3-5 minutes and wipe off. Apply stain to boards as desired and wipe off excess. Let stained wood dry 24-48 hours. Apply an exterior sealant (usually oil based) and let dry 24 hours.

I choose to sand, stain, and seal all of my boards PRE assembly because it makes for a more even stain appearance. Also, I have found it is a challenge to get in the joints if the project is already assembled.

Step 3. Attach Base Pieces

Begin by attaching the 1x8x22” board to the 2x10x25” board using exterior wood glue and 1.5” wood screws. Place one screw in each inner corned and one in the middle. Try to place screws so that that are covered by the 2×4” board that will go on top (the frame).

Step 4. Make Rectangle Frame

Once the base is secure begin to make the 2×4 frame. Using 3” wood screws attach the 2x4x28” boards to the 2x4x18” boards constructing a rectangle. Use a speed square to help with square corners.

Attach the rectangle frame to the base using wood glue and 3” wood screws.

Step 5. Attach Top Pieces

Once the frame is attached to the base it is time for the top 1x8x22” board to be attached to the upper frame. Using wood glue and a nail gun secure.

Take care to note nail placement so that nails go though both boards without splitting the wood.

Step 7. Attach Hook

Find the center of the upper 2x4x18″ portion of the rectangular frame and mark. Next, take a drill bit slightly smaller than the hook to be used and pre-drill a hole. The size drill bit needed should be marked on the hooks package. Screw the hook into the hole.

Step 6. Attach the “Face”

Using the last 1×818” nail it to the front sides of the rectangle frame. This face will conceal the hook and provide a place for customizable lettering.

Step 8. Customize

Here is where you can get creative. Add personalized lettering; such as, a welcoming word or phrase, family name, address numbers, etc. I found it easiest to use a Cricut to cut out white vinyl letters (Welcome). Then apply the vinly letters to the faceplate using transfer paper.

A stencil and paint, paint markers, or freehand brush with paint will also work.

Step 9. Add Flower Basket

Lastly, add the hanging basket to the hook. Stand back and admire your beautiful new porch addition!
